EMD Brand history

Electro Motive Diesel was founded as Electromotive Company in 1922 by H. L. Hamilton. It has a long history in producing  two cycle, medium speed engines for marine, drilling, power generation, and locomotive markets. EMD’s history with the marine industry began in 1930, when the US Navy approached EMD to develop a lighter, more powerful engine for a new fleet of diesel electric submarines.

In 2010 EMD was purchased by Caterpillar’s wholly owned subsidiary, Progress Rail Services Corporation, and maintains major facilities in Illinois (US), Indiana (US), Brazil and Mexico.

The ongoing process of innovation and refinement has grown the EMD engine design into one of the longest lasting medium speed engine families in the world.
